Remote Switch Operators
CBS ArcSafe remote switch operators are used in conjunction with a remote switch actuator to remotely operate various types and styles of circuit breakers, motor control, switches and control circuits. By allowing service personnel to stand outside the arc-flash boundary, CBS ArcSafe remote switch operators reduce the need for a full-body arc-flash hazard suit.
With a remote switch operator (RSO), a service technician can operate, trip and close release circuit breakers from a safe distance using a remote switch actuator (RSA). The remote switch operator can be used in conjunction with a CBS ArcSafe remote racking system or independently as a standalone device.
The remote switch actuators are mechanically assisted by magnets, and no modifications are required to your switchgear. You can easily move the remote switch actuator from one breaker to another.
There are several versions of the CBS ArcSafe remote switch actuators that enable the system to be used with different types of circuit breakers, motor controls, control switches etc. Each remote switch actuator is powered by the RSO portable base unit, which includes a 24V DC power supply and either a pendant control or radio remote control.
There are four different styles of remote switch operators: the RSO-I, RSO-II, RSO-III and RSO-IV. The RSO-I is capable of operating a remote switch actuator that functions only for closing and/or tripping the electrical equipment. The RSO-II is capable of operating two remote switch actuators that close and/or trip electrical equipment at the same time. The RSO-III is designed to operate remote switch actuators that are capable of charging, closing and/or tripping electrical equipment. The RSO-IV is used in conjunction with an appropriate single-use remote racking system.

RSO; RSO-I; RSO-II; RSO-III: US Patent No. 8,006,371B1
RSO-I
The RSO-I is a rechargeable 24V DC power supply that, when used in conjunction with remote switch actuators (RSA), will remotely operate any electrical device needing to be closed and/or tripped.
Devices
- Operating push buttons, such as circuit breaker trip and close buttons
- Operating levers, such as those equipped on motor control centers
- Operating rotary switches, such as pistol-gripped SB1 switches
- Engaging mechanical interlocks, such as circuit breaker interlock foot-pedals
- May be operated with an optional radio remote
RSO-II
The RSO-II is a rechargeable 24V DC power supply that, when used in conjunction with remote switch actuators, will remotely operate any electrical device needing to be closed and/or tripped. The RSO-II provides the convenience of having the operating capabilities of two RSO-I units in one, and allows for two RSAs to be operated at once.
RSO-IIID
The RSO-IIID is a rechargeable 24V DC power supply that, when used in conjunction with remote switch actuators, will remotely operate any electrical device needing to be charged, closed and/or tripped. While the RSO-I only closes or trips equipment, the RSO-IIID performs the more complex operations of charging, closing, and tripping.
Devices
- Operating push buttons, such as circuit breaker trip and close buttons
- Operating levers, such as those equipped on motor control centers
- Operating rotary switches, such as pistol-gripped SB1 switches
- Engaging mechanical interlocks, such as circuit breaker interlock footpedals
- Actuating charging arms
- Operating devices where the close and trip use separate mechanisms
RSO-IV
The RSO-IV operator is a rechargeable 24V DC power supply that, when used in conjunction with an appropriate single-use Remote Racking System (RRS-3), will remotely perform any racking operation that would normally require local operation by trained personnel. Tasks the RSO and RRS-3s can perform include, but are not limited to, the following operations:
Devices
- Installing and removing any switchgear utilizing a rotary racking mechanism
- Installing and removing any switchgear utilizing a non-rotary racking mechanism
- Engaging or disengaging mechanical or electrical interlocks, such as circuit breaker interlock foot-pedals or buttons
